Yellow journalism
is defined as an exaggerated, exploitative, sensational style of newspaper
reporting. It emerged at the end of the nineteenth century when rival newspaper
publishers competed for sales in the coverage of events leading up to and
during the Spanish-American War in 1898.
Yellow journalism uses sensational style to attract readers.
Terrance McCoy,
author of the newsprint on “For the ‘new journalist,’ opportunity comes in
clicks and bucks”, (November 20, 2016), showcased two individuals working on a
pro-Donald Trump website. She stated
that both are 26-year-old college graduates, Paris Wade with an Advertisement
degree and Ben Goldman with a Business degree.
Along with their
parents they were supporters of President Obama. Yet for the election of 2016,
Donald Trump was their choice. They are the owners and the writers of the website
Libertywritersnews.com, which has gotten tens of millions page views, while
working in their pajamas.
Ms. McCoy also
stated that because of their unemployment after graduating from college, they
ended up working at a Mexican restaurant in Tennessee. They later moved to California and started an
advertisement business that failed.
The one client
that was attracted to their work hired them and they started writing stories
that were totally misleading, exaggerated, and untrue. They were getting paid $120 from 10 minutes
of work, based on the amount of clicks they got from the website.
They started making
extreme headlines, which caught the attention of readers. Although they were aware that the information
they were posting on their website was not true, the money they were making was
worth more then telling the truth. Their
goal was to increase the number of viewers by captivating them through bold
headlines on their website.
Greed has played
a major role is our society; now these men have figured out a way to make money
from sensational journalism. They wrote non-factual headlines targeting individuals
they cared about and wrote misleading articles that tore apart individuals they
did not like. So they are profiting from the sensational lies on their website
not caring if and how they destroy lives.
They grew their
business and now have writers and attorneys all over the country supporting
this style of fake news. Some examples of their articles are, “CAN’T TRUST OBAMA”, “DOWN WITH THE GLOBALIST”,
“THE TRUTH IS OUT”, to name a few.

ReplyDeleteYou summarize the content of the YJ article throughout, and interestingly you shift to your argument in the penultimate (second-to-last) paragraph. You say that greed plays a major role in society. My question here is--how do we remove it from news media? I know Facebook is trying to limit the spread of fake news by adding verification labels and easy reporting to news articles, so it will hopefully become easier for readers to identify trustworthy sources. But what do we do in the meantime to convince others to tread more carefully?
