President Trump and The Fake News About Sweden

Rick Novak is a Washington Post writer who stated that on Saturday, February 18, 2017 President Trump made a statement during a rally, "You look at what's happening last night in Sweden, who would believe this?” this indicated the possibility of a terrorist attack in Sweden because of the possible increase in immigrants.  He brought back reference to the attacks in these three cities: Paris, Nice and Brussels in his statement, which caused confusion around the world because there was no terrorist attack in Sweden. Trump repeated a statement he heard from Fox News without verifying its accuracy.

Another way that Trump was spreading the news, Novak stated was by tweeting. He then tried to clarify his statement using Twitter saying, “My statement as to what happened in Sweden was in reference to a story that was broadcasted on Fox News concerning immigrants and Sweden.” He is not taking responsibility for what he said and is blaming it on Fox News.  Andrew Brown, a writer from the Guardian, wrote from his own personal experience.  He stated that twentieth century Sweden was a place where foreign progressives only believed that everything ran perfectly.

Now, in the twenty-first century, it has become a country where the individuals who are called Foreign Right-Wingers believe that nothing is running perfectly.  Brown reminisced from when he lived in Sweden during the early 1980s. Where he lived was considered the ghettoes.  His neighborhood consisted of predominantly Caucasian people.  As he recalled, he thought that their community issues were due to the individuals making vodka in their kitchens, which was considered to be the worst thing that could have happened in his community.

He went back twenty years later and was able to see the changes in the community he used to call home.   A family from Somalia resides in the apartment he once lived in.  Also, most of the individuals living there were now Muslims who are now blamed for all that are going wrong in Sweden.  During his visit, he noticed that the area was more segregated.  He felt no danger or hostility from the new residents of his old community.

Brown did point out that there was an increase in crime in Sweden, and it is still a much safer place than the United States, United Kingdom and most of Europe.  The NBC writer, Phil McCusland, stated that in his research of the State Department Bureau of Diplomatic Security’s Crime and Safety Report on Sweden, released last May, the overall crime rate rose 4 percent in 2015 and this was due to the rise in computer fraud, which has nothing to do with the Muslim residents.

Max Bearak of the Washington Post wrote two days later that President Trump made that FAKE statement about Sweden.  He stated, “that the immigrants recently started some violence,” which was not true after Trumps fake statement; riots did break out in the predominately immigrant neighborhood in Stockholm.  Again, last week there was another attack that was stated by one of the writers from the Guardian.  Does this mean the violence will continue?

It is going to be so important to verify the credentials of sources of all news, especially the ones that are bias, making sure it is not just rumors or lies because as seen now, it can cause violent out breaks.
